Rug Doctor vs. Bissell Big Green

I've been given both products to review from Vine and after a week of steam cleaning with the Rug Doctor, here's the rundown.The cleaning tanks:Big Green BISSELL Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine Professional Grade Carpet Cleaner, 86T3- smaller tank, easier to fill and dump, black and white spinny indicator dial tells you if you are still dispensing solution. (I have owned this for 2 years now, my review should be the third one down)Rug Doctor - larger capacity, no removable clean water tank makes filling the tank a bit of a pain, especially if you are not right next to a source of hot water.. Leaves you in the dark as to when the clean water tank runs out as there is no indicator, and the clean tank is blue and opaque in color. Capacity of dirty tank far exceeds the capacity of the clean water tank, which is also more difficult to dump.The comfort factor:Big Green - feels more sturdy at the handle, which is more flexible than the Rug Doctor's. Lighter machine (partly due to the decreased capacity) and much easier to push. The machine's handle locks at 90 degrees, which makes it easy to scoot the machine over small inclines in flooring. (such as baby gates and thresholds) I can do my entire 1600+ sq ft carpeting and not even feel it the next day.Rug Doctor - the handle leaves a lot to be desired. It has a lever to pull to reposition the angle of the handle. The point that joins the handle to the machine feels flimsy. Even when locked at 90 degrees, it still feels flimsy and makes hefting the machine over bumps in the road all the more difficult. The machine is very difficult to push - it almost feels like the machine is fighting me - and it made my hand (the space between the thumb and index finger) and right shoulder sore to use this machine for an extended period. Compounding this is the fact that the button to dispense fluid is in an awkward position, which puts additional strain on the wrist.Performance:Big Green: capable machine. About the same cleaning power as the Bissell 2x Pro Heat. I use Bissell's solution and sometimes add a bit of vinegar or lemon juice to boost cleaning. Great suction power, no major issues.Rug Doctor: I actually don't know if it is the machine, my inability to puch the machine as fast as the Bissell, or Rug Doctor's formula, but the Rug Doctor seemed to get stains out with fewer passes. Next time my carpets are filthy I might use the Rug Doctor with Bissell's formula, or the Big Green with Rug Doctor's formula to check it out. It is to be noted that when I use the Bissell I do push it rather quickly, which is likely the reason for the difference. I tried to keep my pace the same with the Rug Doctor, but was unable to do so.Nit Noids:Both machines come with a detachable hose. Rug Doctor was nice enough to throw in a bag for their hose.Both machines are pretty much the same size overall, with Rug Doctor being slightly taller and slightly wider than Big Green.Both machines are roughly at the same price point with 30 dollars currently separating the two.Overall build quality on both machines (aside from the handle) feels about the same.Drying time on the Rug Doctor seems longer.The lid on the Rug Doctor does not flip up. It just kind of gets in the way of everything.Overall, I prefer my Big Green. I'd say you would be satisfied with either machine, but more satisfied with the Bissell. If you are looking at these machines then you probably have a lot of carpet to clean. So if you are bent on getting the Rug Doctor you won't necessarily be displeased with your purchase. It is a nice machine, a capable machine, and is not significantly more expensive. I'll be updating this as I use both machines over the next several months, hopefully with a video if I can get my act together, LOL! ;-)I hope this review has been helpful!

Comparison to the Bissell Big Green 86T3

I have had numerous carpet cleaners over the years and am comparing it to my BISSELL Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine Professional Grade Carpet Cleaner, 86T3This was a snap to set up. I pulled it out of the box and straightened the handle (which folds down for storage). I immediately noticed that, while both are made of plastic, this seems to be a much thinner, cheaper-feeling plastic. Although there was nothing to assemble, when I tried snapping the top down (on top of the water tanks), it would not latch. I kept thinking something wasn't aligned, but after repeated attempts and a little forcing it did. I had this trouble for the first dozen or so times I replaced the tanks.Size-wise, it is a little narrower (wheel-to-wheel) than the Bissell, but takes a little more space in depth. This increases a lot if you fold down the handle. The Bissell's handle does not fold.When I went to fill the water tank, I was very surprised to find there is no tank I could fill in the sink. The instructions tell you to fill a bucket and empty that into the tank. The water tank is not removable at all, so it also tells you not to fill it all the way if you only have a little cleaning so the tank will fully empty. I was very surprised to learn that there is no way to empty the tank if I overfilled. I don't like the thought that I have to keep spreading the solution around or worry about mold growing in the tank in leftover solution.The water tank is solid with no indicator to tell me how much solution is left. It also spread water way faster than I expected. I was quickly out, but didn't realize it for another five minutes, necessitating re-doing that section. The manual says the noise changes, but I never noticed a difference and ran out numerous times. I found this a huge drawback and one that would keep me from recommending this machine.The machines have very different method of operation. The Bissell moves like a vacuum. It has spin brushes and moves easily. This Rug Doctor only moves forward when solution is being applied, otherwise you have to tilt it back slightly. It has a set of straight bristles on the front that move back and forth (like brushing teeth) when solution is applies, otherwise they do not move. This took me a while to get used to. I don't feel like the carpet was scrubbed as well. The Bissell's system always collects dog fur embedded in the carpet. I don't know if this is a good thing or not. The Rug Doctor is made to use in straight, orderly lines and is more difficult than the Bissell to move around freely. On the other hand, the Bissell is so easy to flit around with that I have run over the cord several times. The spin brushes ate the cord coating. That should not be a problem with the Rug Doctor.I thought it would be great at sucking back the dirty water, but I got one full dirty tank for five clean ones. I got a better return with the Bissell.I have not rented a carpet cleaner in many years, but a friend stopped by when I was using this and said it looked exactly like the one he rents. There were tags on it stating that it was not for rental use.I greatly prefer the Bissell to this. The difference in ease of use is dramatic. I can pull out the Bissell for a spill with no problems. This seems like it would only be for Carpet Cleaning Day. I can't tell if there is a cleaning difference or not, but, if there is, it is not significant. If you have rented the Rug Doctor and like it, then you might like this. Otherwise, get the Bissell.

I have owned all three of the titled rug shampooers, and there is no clear winner except in individual categories. This Rug Doctor Mighty Pro X3, however, cleans the best, with the least amount of leakage and carpet fuzz. My wall-to-wall carpet areas look better and cleaner in one pass than they do even with two passes on the others. Unfortunately, the Rug Doctor is not as easy to use.The main drawbacks of this model is the non-removable fill tank and its small capacity. You must use a separate bucket to mix the solution and pour it into the reservoir. The top of the reservoir doesn't lift up fully, so adding the hot water is awkward and not as easy as it should be. And because the tank is so small (for such a big machine!), I had to refill the solution often to clean multiple rooms. Because the solution tank is part of the machine, you cannot empty it if you have leftover solution. I suppose in that case, it's good that the tank empties so quickly. Hoover SteamVac: easy to fill but small tank; messy leaks when moving it around; easy to fill and empty. Bissell Big Green: huge tank capacity for doing multiple rooms; messy leaks when moving it around; easy to fill and empty.The Rug Doctor Mighty Pro excels in cleaning. None of the three machines makes the carpet look as good. It does not leave any streaks or carpet fuzz from an agitator. A single pass is as effective as a dual pass with the other machines. The one drawback is that the suction doesn't take as much water out of the carpet, resulting in longer dry times. This may be because the Rug Doctor applies solution AND sucks up water in the same pass. For this reason, the Rug Doctor does its job much more quickly than the Hoover, which requires separate passes to clean and to suck up solution. Hoover: although cleaning is adequate, it does not match the other two. It requires multiple passes in each strip to apply solution and then vacuum. The smaller width covers less carpet per pass. The clean carpet looks as though it has been vacuumed because of the agitator marks. Carpet drying time is between the other two machines. Dirty water tank fills up too quickly. Bissell: also great at cleaning, but it can leave dirty water marks if you stop in mid-job; the circular agitators pull out some of the carpet fibers; powerful suction results in carpets drying in a much shorter length of time.When in the upright position, the Rug Doctor can be pulled ONLY backward. To advance the machine to the next strip of carpet or to move it to another room, you must tip it backward on its wheels. This makes its maneuverability somewhat awkward. The handle seems a bit too short and flimsy to support this action, although it works. The handle folds down for storage, and it has two places to grip for carrying. Hoover: Its upright-vacuum shape and movement is the most intuitive. Its lighter weight makes it easier in some ways to transport, although I find it easier (though heavier) to grasp both the Rug Doctor and the Bissell. Bissell: The large inset wheels can be moved both forward and back; the handle is sturdy and in a good position for a person of average height. I find it to be the easiest of the three to store, since its handle folds down like the Rug Doctor's, requiring less overheard room than the Hoover. (The Rug Doctor also stores in a blocky shape, but it is taller.) The Bissell has easier to grip handles for carrying, although they are similar in style to the Rug Doctor's.Conclusion: Although the Hoover SteamVac is the most economical choice, it doesn't do as good a job as the other two; still, if the others are out of your budget or if you have a strength issue, it remains a solid choice. However, after using the other two, I cannot go back to the SteamVac. When it comes to deciding between the Rug Doctor Mighty Pro or the Bissell Big Green, you'll have to weigh the pros and cons of each to determine which is right for you. Honestly, I cannot even decide myself which of the big machines to use the next time I clean my carpets. I like the way my carpets look after using the Rug Doctor, but I don't like filling and refilling the small solution tank with a bucket. I like the one-pass (clean and vacuum) operation, but I don't like the longer drying time. The bottom line is that if I had ONLY the Rug Doctor, I'd be happy using it. The problem only comes with comparing it to the Bissell, and then it becomes a toss-up.-- Debbie Lee Wesselmann
