By PT Cruiser
Since replacing all of our downstairs carpeting with porcelain tile and some vinyl flooring, I jumped at the chance to try this Bissell Steam and Sweep Floor Cleaner. It's such a good idea to have a floor sweep built in because it seems like even if you vacuum before mopping the floor, there are always a few little shnibblies or dust bunnies that suddenly appear out of nowhere when you weren't looking. How nice to be able to sweep them up right while you're mopping, huh? But it doesn't always work that way. Sometimes this steamer/sweeper will pick up dust or little bits of stuff and then steam clean the same area. But the sweeper doesn't have any suction, like a vacuum cleaner does. What is has are these little rubber or vinyl brushes that spin very fast in the front of the steamer. Sometimes they pick up debris and sometimes you have to go back over it a couple times to get it to pick up. The problem is, when you go back over it with a wet mop pad behind the brushes, you end up getting the dust or dirt wet and it smears and leaves a little line of gunk on your floor that doesn't seem to disappear no mater now many times you go over it. If you have tile floors it often ends up in the grout line which makes it even more difficult to clean. This is especially so with those little dust bunnies that magically appear on hard flooring just about every day. And you don't even want to think about sweeping up a few granules of kitty litter when the steam is going. You'll end up with a gunky mess. You could use the sweeper first, before you start to steam mop, but a roller brush on hard surfaces isn't anywhere near as effective or fast as a stick vacuum. So my solution is just to vacuum first, even though this cleaner is advertised to do both in one step. The other problem is that the steam is only released through one small tube, about 1/4 inch wide in the center of the mop. The removable terry cloth pad that is held to the bottom of the mop with velcro does get hot, but most of the steam seems to be released out the sides. I think it might be more effective if there were several steam vents in the bottom of this steamer. The bottom of the mop is not so hot that I can't touch it with my hand right after I've released steam using the pump on the handle. The other thing is that since it only ejects steam and doesn't suction up any steam or dirty water, you have to stop after doing a section of your floor and shut off the machine, remove the pad, rinse it out and put it back on. If you don't, you're just moving a dirty pad over your floor. If you have a large area to mop that means stopping several times to do this. Even when my floors aren't very dirty it's time consuming to have to keep cleaning the pad. The instructions say that you can throw it in the wash, but I wouldn't want a dirty thing like that in with my other wash. And it's too small to wash alone. There are some good things about this machine. It has a nice long cord and it's very lightweight. It comes with a replacement pad and the terry pads are nice and thick. I like that you don't have to use any cleaning solutions in it. The less chemicals I have to use, the better. For light cleaning jobs this can be useful after you've vacuumed the floor first (with a vacuum cleaner), but for sweeping and mopping at the same time, it just doesn't do it for me.

By D. Williams
GOOD POINTS:The Steam and Sweep cleaner is an excellent cleaner. It is much more manageable to use than a string mop and bucket, and sanitizes more than a mop and bucket can - no heavy, awkward mop and bucket! This cleaner uses only steam and sweeper pads to clean, no chemicals that could harm pets or children, and it is quite obvious that the steam this cleaner creates and the sweeper pads do an excellent job. Even though I had mopped my kitchen floor with a string mop and pine cleaner yesterday, I tried the cleaner out shortly after its arrival today. The sweeper pad picked up dirt that the mop had obviously missed. The manual is concise but thorough. It is mainly verbiage, but the verbiage is clearly-written and enhanced with pictures when needed - just the way I like such a manual.Service, when needed, can be a problem when one lives in a rural area, as we do, but I checked Bissell's website to see where we could get service on the Steam and Sweep if we needed it. Several Bissell-approved service centers are a reasonable drive away.BAD POINTS (Picky, picky!):The manual for the cleaner clearly recommends using distilled water to help prolong the cleaner's effectiveness and longevity. Though the distilled water may help the machine in the long run, it is expensive and a bit inconvenient. Is there a way it could be redesigned to take tap water? Or if the water source has a filter, would that be acceptable? The cleaner, of course, does not come out of the box ready to use. Some people might need a little (just a little!) help to make sure it is assembled efficiently and properly. (In other words, the mechanically-inclined could assemble it in five minutes or less; those not so inclined could assemble it fairly easily, too, but it would take longer.) It does have to be plugged in, and when one is dealing with water or steam near electricity, one doesn't want to take any chances with incorrect assembly.OVERALL IMPRESSION:My title for this review actually sums up my opinion very well. Even considering the picky criticism I mentioned, I definitely recommend this machine, especially for people whose homes have hard-surface flooring in separate locations of the house and who would have to cross carpet to get to all the hard-surface floors.

By Pam T
The Bissell Steam & Sweep is a gadget and not really a hard-core cleaning device like a vacuum cleaner or rug-cleaner. It's more like a major improvement on the cheaper stick-cleaners you can pick up at the grocery store.PRO's-- easy to assemble-- easy to fill water basket-- heats up quickly-- easy to use-- doesn't appear to scratch surfaces (I tried it on wood, linoleum, and tile)-- long enough cord-- compactNEG's-- doesn't really sterilize (my opinion). The floor surface gets a nice bath in warm water -which loosens dirt- but I never sensed that the water was delivered in a manner that would sterilize a surface.-- sort of hard to get the 'dust/dirt bin' back on. There wasn't a well defined 'click' that told you when it was seated.EXAMPLES-- I tried this on the grotty linoleum floor we're having replaced in the bathroom. The steamer worked better than a swiffer, especially if you worked slowly and let the steam loosen the old dirt.-- Both my husband and I tried the steamer on our hardwood floors. He tried it on a patch of floor that needs to be refinished. The steamer actually changed the color of the wood, making it white-ish. This didn't change until I went over the floor again with Murphy's Soap. I used the steamer on the good floor where the cat had peed because my daughter locked him out of his cat box :( The floor was cleaned of grime that was there previously, but did nothing for the urine smell.OVERALL, I like this product. It's a lightweight alternative to my beloved mop & bucket. Perfect for between time cleans. By which I mean that my kids and dogs (and husband) and their friends are constantly spilling fluids and leaving messy footprints. The Steam-and-Sweep is great for making the floor look better. However, for real cleaning, I still feel I have to drag out the big guns -my mop and big yellow mop bucket- to which I can add Lysol and Murphy soap.Pam T~
