4Does a Decent Job but With Minor Annoyances
By Lewis A. Edge Jr.
All carpet cleaning machines essentially do the same thing:1. Wet the carpet with a cleaning solution.2. Scrub the carpet with brushes3. Suck the cleaning solution and dirt out of the carpetWhat distinguishes a carpet cleaning machine is how easily, conveniently and thoroughly it can do those three things. For this machine, assembly out-of-the-box requires a Phillips screwdriver and about five minutes. Most of this machine is made of plastic. From the side, it looks like a giant red and black running shoe with a handle on it. It comes with a hose and three attachments; one narrow cleaning tool with brush, one wider cleaning tool with brush and a crevice tool. They are for cleaning hard-to-reach corners and upholstery. A switch on the bottom front of the machine toggles between operating the machine upright or through the hose. All of the tools have a convenient push-button sprayer on them.In this cleaner there is a hard plastic tank containing a flexible plastic bladder that holds about a gallon of cleaning solution. The bladder shrinks as the cleaning solution is being consumed, leaving space in the tank for the dirty solution that is being sucked up by the machine. The machine and its brushes clean a swath about a foot wide on each pass and it does a pretty good job of cleaning carpets right to a wall or baseboard. I found that this machine successfully sucked up about half of the dirty cleaning solution, leaving the remaining solution to dry from evaporation. This machine managed to remove, with pretreatment, all but one old spilled coffee stain from my "test" carpeting and left all carpeting that I cleaned fresh and sweet smelling. The thickest carpeting needed more than twelve hours to dry after cleaning. I used both the small hand brush and the crevice tool to clean corners and other areas of carpeting where the machine would not fit. Each attachment had a convenient push button for spraying cleaning solution and they worked reasonably well. After cleaning my carpets, I found that emptying and cleaning the solution tank could be done in just two or three minutes. At this price, I was not expecting an "industrial strength" machine. This upright cleaner is definitely not one of those. At this price point, I suppose I can put up with the small solution tank and the flimsy plastic attachment holders. For small carpet cleaning jobs it works surprising well but having the hose attachment repeatedly fall out of its holder while cleaning carpets when using the machine upright is annoying. Nonetheless, the machine does the three things that I have listed well enough to tackle small jobs. For big jobs, I believe that you'll need a more robust machine with a bigger solution tank. However, after using this machine to clean one of our carpets, my wife told me that it cleans just as well as the big rental machines but is much easier to handle.

5Pleased in all respects.
By William Oterson
The only Bissell I've used in the past was the 'Clean Green Machine' that was used, mostly, for car interiors, and some upholstery spot cleaning. However, I have used "Hoover upright rug cleaners" which I used for comparative purposes. The "Bissell DeepClean Essential Upright Deep Cleaner" came packaged well, with nothing loose or bouncing about. Set-up required very little time but a screwdriver was needed for 2 long and 3 short screws.I tested this 'Bissell' rug cleaner on 3 room size rugs. First a very tight weave, next a rug with a looser weave, and lastly a Berber, experiencing no difficulty at all. I'm pleased with the degree of cleaning and also the power of the vacuum as the cleaner brush was able to pick up lint that my vacuum had missed, or left behind. The single water tank with bladder was a surprise as I've been accustomed to double tanks, but, I found it to work just as well and with the added convenience of making the cleaner a bit lighter. A big plus for me was the ease in removing, filling with water and cleaner fluid, reinstalling and removing for emptying dirty water. It's as easy as can be."Bissell" directs the user to spray once forward and also back (then forward and back for vacuuming) which lessens the area that can be cleaned before the need to change water but, if this practice is followed, the ease of using a single tank makes even that not much of a problem.Tools provided for other cleaning purposes, such as spot cleaning, attach easily to the machine, however, a hardwood floor cleaning tool isn't among them. I found the power cord to be of an excellent length and although I wondered about the 'cheap' wheels they seemed to function just fine. All things considered I'm quite pleased with this cleaner from "Bissell" and if I find it necessary I'll provide an update to this review.

4The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
By Susan McIntyre
Let's start with the "ugly". The water that appeared in the waste container after running this machine over my carpet was grossly dirty. Oops and I have been walking around on that floor barefooted. I take it this means that the machine is working well and will get a good workout at my house. The "good": This machine cleans like crazy.I tried it on my dirty carpet, and on a cheap flat rug I have in the kitchen. It does great spot cleaning. I also tried it on a small piece of bare floor. The tools to do spot cleaning are quite accessible, and easy to use. It was easy to assemble, I did it myself. I had a Bissell Little green machine in the past. I thought it was totally useless. It was supposed to work with steam, but this machine clearly states that it uses hot water and it has a built in heater. I have little dogs and two young grandsons who frequently visit the house. I can use a carpet cleaner regularly, if I can just get myself motivated. The "Bad": Number one bad is the lid to the water container, it is very tight and it took me a long time to get it open the first time. It was equally difficult to get it open during subsequent attempts to open it. I tried all kinds of tools and finally got it open. I understand why they want it well closed to protect the machine from stray water, but there has got to be a reasonable way to make the lid easier to open. The machine is huge and I have not figured out a place to store it without hauling it down to the basement. It is also quite heavy and hard to push around when not in use. And there is the universal issue of the cord getting in the way while you clean. I guess that is to be expected.I thought that the water ran out too soon and the machine didn't seem to have a way to let me know it was dry. I had to keep testing the areas to make sure it was wet.
